British Values

At Park Primary School we are committed to promoting the fundamental British Values that underpin a fair, inclusive, and respectful society. They are explored through our PSHE (Personal, Social, Health and Economic) education, assemblies, classroom discussions, and wider school activities.

What are British Values?

The Department for Education defines five key British Values:

Democracy

We encourage all pupils to take part in decision-making processes and understand the importance of having a voice. This includes:
– School council elections
– Class votes and discussions
– Pupil feedback surveys
– Learning about government and elections in PSHE and current events

Children learn that everyone has the right to be heard, and that democratic processes are essential in a fair society.

The Rule of Law

A clear understanding of rules and laws helps our pupils distinguish right from wrong. At school, we:
– Reinforce our behaviour policies consistently
– Help pupils understand the reasons behind rules (in school and in society)
– Invite visitors such as police officers or legal professionals to speak with pupils
– Promote fairness and justice in daily interactions

Pupils learn the value of laws in protecting rights and keeping people safe.

Individual Liberty

At Park Primary School we promote an environment where pupils feel safe to express their views and make choices. We teach them:
– To understand their rights and responsibilities
– How to stay safe (including online safety and making healthy choices)
– The importance of self-expression and individuality

Children are supported in developing self-confidence while understanding how their actions affect others.

Mutual Respect

Respect is at the heart of our school values. We teach pupils to:
– Treat others kindly and listen to different opinions
– Work collaboratively and celebrate each other’s achievements
– Show courtesy and empathy in and out of the classroom

Respect is modelled by staff and pupils alike, creating a warm and supportive school culture.

Tolerance of Those of Different Faiths and Beliefs

We are proud of the diversity within our school and wider community. Pupils learn about:
– Different religions and worldviews in Religious Education
– Celebrations and traditions from around the world
– The importance of challenging stereotypes and discrimination

We promote understanding and appreciation of different cultures, helping our pupils grow into global citizens.

Embedding British Values in School Life

British Values are not taught as a standalone subject, but are embedded across all areas of school life, including:
– Classroom discussions and debates
– Assemblies themed around current events or moral topics
– Collaborative projects that promote teamwork and respect
– Opportunities for leadership and responsibility

By weaving these values into everyday learning, we help children develop into thoughtful, respectful and active members of society.
